Understanding dyslexia

Reading Intervention Built for Dyslexic Minds

Dyslexia is not a vision problem, a lack of intelligence, or laziness. It is a neurological difference in how the brain processes written language. Children with dyslexia often struggle with phonemic awareness — the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds in words — which makes traditional reading instruction ineffective for them.

At Elementary Tutoring Services, we use structured literacy — an explicit, systematic approach that teaches reading in a way the dyslexic brain can absorb. Our lessons are influenced by the Orton-Gillingham method and the Barton Reading & Spelling System, both gold-standard interventions for dyslexia.

Our approach

What Structured Literacy Looks Like in Session

Every lesson is carefully sequenced so skills build logically — no guessing, no gaps. We work through the foundational layers of reading one at a time:

  • Phonemic Awareness

Teaching students to hear, segment, and blend sounds before ever seeing them in print.

  • Explicit Phonics

Direct, systematic teaching of sound-symbol relationships — not implicit guessing from pictures or context.

  • Orthographic Mapping

Helping students connect sounds to spelling patterns so words become permanently stored in memory.

  • Fluency & Comprehension

Building speed and accuracy so the brain can focus on meaning, not just decoding.

Multisensory by Design

Every session engages sight, sound, and movement simultaneously. Students trace letters in sand, tap out syllables, and use color-coded tiles — reinforcing neural pathways through multiple senses.

Is Your Child Showing These Signs?

Struggles to sound out simple words
Guesses at words based on first letter or picture
Avoids reading aloud or shows anxiety about reading
Trouble remembering sight words despite repetition
Slow, labored reading with frequent errors
Difficulty spelling even common words
Family history of reading or spelling difficulties
Confuses letter directions (b/d, p/q)

If several of these sound familiar, your child may benefit from a structured literacy assessment. Early intervention is the single strongest predictor of reading success for students with dyslexia.
